Boring...

So, what did you do during Christmas? Sleep, eat and watch TV.

I hate staying in. And that sounds all my frustration. What else can I do? ALL the shops are closed and the streets look as if they are deserted. If anyone thinks Christmas is supposed to joyous, think again. Maybe it is to you... but not to me... not to foreigners living here. Even McDonald's is shut. You know what? I get angry very easily when there's not enough food...

Ok. Now that's enough words from me today. Back to bed. Oh yea, and the TV keeps showing all those Christmas programs. Crap lah.

Manchester

Manchester, the city made famous by cotton in the Victorian times. Mills and factories emerged rapidly, turning the city into an industrial stronghold. Their owners became rich and wealthy in a very short time. People flock into the city from the countryside, hoping for a better life. Together with the cities in northern England, their advances during the Industrial Revolution made England the richest nation in the world. Such was the fame of Manchester that cities like Osaka in Japan are dubbed the “Manchester of the East” due to its textile industry that rivaled the scale of Manchester.

The millionaires in Manchester started to build grand structure as their residence and as shopping complexes. The face of Manchester is transformed completely. However, the city council of Manchester faced a problem. Unlike London, they do not have a landmark that symbolizes the city. Hence, they came to a decision – to build a town hall that even amidst all the grand structure can be regarded as unique and even greater. The result is a castle-like structure whose floor and windows are decorated with patterns of cotton. This shows how important cotton means to the people of Manchester.

The cotton industry faced a decline after the wars, and now, what makes Manchester famous all over the world is no longer its industry, but the two very famous stadiums – Old Trafford and the City of Manchester Stadium. The former is the world champions and the latter is the richest football club in the world.

On public transport, Manchester does not have the convenience of the underground in London. Instead, it has metrolink, a network of trams that links the city and its suburbs. Unless it is absolutely necessary, I won’t consider using it. The speed is incredibly slow.

There is also a Chinatown in Manchester. It’s not quite big. It’s very very small if you compared it to that in London. The arc in front of the Chinatown reads, “曼彻斯特中国城” or “Manchester’s China Town”.

Edinburgh Christmas Shopping...

Or so it's called for the outing on the last Sunday of the term.

Edinburgh,
The colourful and vibrant Scottish capital.

Actually I took all the pictures along the same street - Princes Street. It's where all the shops are located. Didn't manage to get to Edinburgh Castle...

Just look at the weather - dull and gloomy. Typical British weather. No wonder they get skin cancer so easily when exposed to strong sunlight.

SNOW...

It SNOWed at Strathallan recently!!! well... not that recently actually... about a few weeks ago... on a Sunday. Oleh kerana tidak ber-blog for a long time, this post only come up today =p

I woke up to this view in the morning... "WOW" I thought... I haven't seen snow since the end of my Japan trip 2 years ago... It was white, quiet and so peaceful. The only sound that I find annoying in such tranquility is the kadak kadak kadak sound of the salt-sprinkling "bulldozer"...
PS: Salt increases the melting point of ice so ice does not form in the middle of the road which would result in skidding and this is a hazard for drivers, even experienced ones.

The lawn behind my house. We managed a snow-fight but I still miss the one we had in Asahikawa. There just isn't enough snow here to have the real stuff. Snow in Asahikawa is always knee-deep and fights can be tough.

Just look at the amount of snow I managed in one grab. It's a pity! Such snowballs would not have the devastating power of thrashing into the face of others.
PS: One of the reasons why I couldn't make a good snowball is becos' - no gloves and my hands are freezing. But as I got my gloves on, beware!! I became the fearsome predator that throws massive snowballs.

The day just isn't complete with a chill out. The chill just came up from the bottom to my head. Good way to wake you up in the morning.
PS: Avoid it if you can, you will get up with a wet trousers and a freezing buttocks.

OK... now back to my study table. Will update whenever possible....

Glasgow and ICE!!!

These are some pictures I took in Glasgow:

Outside the Queen rail station in Glasgow...

The main shopping street of Glasgow... Buchanan street...

Now, I am back in school. And the weather is unbelievable. It's ice-cold outside. The dew on the grass has frozen into ice. I am basically shivering all the way to the classrooms and back... Aaaargh... hate it. I think the temperature is around 0 deg celsius now... and guess what!!! It's not even November. If this trend continues, I am pretty sure there will be snow in December. YAY and BOO... Yay to the snow... Boo to the cold...

Day out at Buckingham

Two more pictures I took (or rather my mum took of me while we were at Buckingham Palace, the residence of the Queen...)

Buckingham Palace...

The guards...

We went to witness the changing of guards at the Buckingham Palace. But unfortunately, we stood at a disadvantaged location and we couldn't see much. It was also raining at that time, but luckily it stopped halfway through the procession...

My London trip...

The weird thing is:
No matter how hard I tried, I could only upload TWO pictures per post... WTH!!!

Me, in front of the London Eye

Me, in front of the famed double-decker bus of London...

You could almost always see the monotonous me in the pictures. Needless to say, I lack facial expressions... On the way to Glasgow now... hehe... got free Internet connection onboard.

Still Stranded in London...

Ok... Now I will alternate between using English and Chinese in my blog. One of the reasons for this is because now that I am taking A-Level Chinese, I will need to practice my writing skills a lot, and my blog is a good place to do so... For those of my friends who can't read Chinese... really sorry, maybe you can find a translator or go learn some... It's not hard actually, just a couple of strokes to make up a single character. =p

Another hectic day again. Went all the way to Barnet (1 hour by train from London city centre) to visit Uncle Michael and Aunt Anna. Had a pub lunch... huge portion of food and drank a bit of shandy (the shandy here is the real deal, unlike the canned one I have drunk in Brunei... it's more concentrated and really heats me up!) And then the long trip back to the hotel and then to Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, London Eye, House of Parliament... Done quite a lot of sightseeing this afternoon and my legs are exhausted. It sure feels good to be lying on my bed now...

And TOMORROW!!!

It's MUSEUM DAY... So which of the following should I go?:
1. London Science Museum
2. National Science Museum
3. London Aquarium
4. National Art Gallery
5. Madam Tussaud's
Most importantly, it's FREE admission!!! (except for Madam Tussaud's...) Or more precisely, it's sponsored by the tax-payers. It's SO nice of them... although I know some of them prefer to be mean...... but what to do???

Cool Book...

Gavin Menzies -

Gavin Menzies -
1421 - The Year China Discovers the World

LONDON!!!

YAY!

After 6.5 hours of backache and unease, here I am, in the cool breeze of London. Forced to stay in Brunei Hall because there's no other "money-friendly" accomodation around. It was 4-in-a-room last night, and tonight it's 5-in-a-room. Fortunately for me, the room is rather big, at least I don't feel that crowded here. And the shower here is scary... the handle is charged!!! Well... This morning I was standing in the shower cubicle and I want to turn the tap on, and I feel my hand go numb. The water did flow... but my hand just has that kind of weird feeling. At first, I have no idea what it is... but after "thorough investigation" by touching repeatedly (kind of stupid actually...) and "intense thinking", I figured out that the handle is charged... well... or more precisely... slightly charged... Enough to cause numbness but no casualties to-date (as far as I have known...). It would be ugly to get electricuted when showering...

Went to Chinatown, Picadilly Circus and Oxford Street with David and Peng today. David told me yesterday he will belanja the lunch today and I end up as the one paying... But he made it up to me by belanja-ing me dinner. Ate my char-siew rice as lunch and fried kuay tiew as dinner... OOOO... I miss those food... And the shop I went to eat my dinner even sell Nasi Lemak at a staggering GBP 6.50... WTH!! That gives around $18... How can a nasi lemak be so expensive... and roti canai costs more that GBP 2... Apakan?!

After Peng left us, we continue to wander to South Kensington... Nothing much there actually, but because David wants to go back to his previous school... so.. yea. Just a small and rather quiet neighbourhood.. but lots of restaurant, and of course, food. The two of us were like idiots going about the street asking every shop we can find about AAAA batteries for his bluetooth earphone. Mind you, not AAA but AAAA. After the survey:
50% says no stock
40% says never heard of those
10% says go to the shop next door.
And yea... after 2 hours combing the street... we returned empty-handed. So pity David... he will no longer be able to use his bluetooth earphone after his current battery runs out. One of the shopkeeper even went to the extent of calling up the supplier but even the supplier has no stock in hand pasal inda laku...

and TOMORROW!!!

Tomorrow there's a big event... having tea with Pehin... Yea... he's in London and he went to Strath. And my parents coming TOMORROW... along with my Kang Shi Fu noodles!!! Aaaahh... I can't wait for tomorrow...

1/2 term

YAY!!! 2 more days to half-term. 10 days holidays!!! Going to LONDON... And hopefully I can upload pictures with the Internet connection there.

Nothing more to talk about these days. Still the usual thing, and the weather is getting really unpredictable. Last few days were extremely comfortably cool, but today is chilly and icy. Got my form order too... All A's... nothing special... the usual thing.... Esseh....

Hoping to see GLASGOW too. Staying one night before coming back to school.

Updates...

Cheers!

Translation:
September has left. Welcome to the chilly month of October.

Chilly? Yup, chilly!

Like a breeze, a month has gone by, and the weather has become more unbearably cold as winter approaches. Still sticking to the usual schedule every day: lessons, food, sports, movie, mp3, sleep and so on... Today is Sunday, and I can go to Perth this afternoon to loiter around, and “forage” for food. I’m kind of fed up of the food in the cafeteria, so for more varieties, I have to go to Perth, or even better London during the half-term. There’s no McDonald’s or Burger King in Perth, so I’m so looking forward to go to London. Apart from that, the weather is Scotland is scary, especially early in the morning, it’s cold like hell.

Yay! Our half-term starts October 16. Will leave by train to London after the house music on that day, arriving maybe around 8pm. Hopefully there’s a vacant room or bed in Brunei Hall, so I can save a lot on accomodation. Expenditure on food is expected to be high, and it’s quite inevitable because all of us have to eat, and the food in London is famous for its pricing.

Before returning to Strathallan, I am going to stay one night in Glasgow so that I could rest and explore Glasgow. All boarders have to be in the school by 9pm of 26th October, and then there goes another one and a half month before the next holiday... X’mas! But as the policies of Mindef go, all of the scholars are not allowed to return to Brunei except during summer holidays, so I may be renting a house with my friends in Manchester for the X’mas. No way I am going to stay in Scotland. It’s too damn cold...

Cheers!

Fragrant Rice - Jay Chou.

Boring Sunday

No breakfast and lunch today. Instead we have brunch at 10.30am. Roll call at 11.00am. So for those who do not want to eat, they can actually wake up at 10.59am. It’s a boring Sunday. Much boring than the previous Sundays. We have more than 4 hours to spend in Perth (from 1-5pm). Went to a Chinese buffet restaurant, costs around 7 pounds. Quite cheap by the standards here. Most of the foods are mainly fried food and sweet stuffs, but at least there’s rice to eat… Then, went to Tesco and bought a whole lot of stuff, a trolley of foodstuffs for the 3 of us.

Great weather today. It’s one of the few days when the sun is actually shining. Temperature is slightly warmer than previous days. Unfortunately, I was too tired to play sports. So I spent the whole day staying in the room doing lazy things like lying down and listening to music. After all, it’s a Sunday…

......

I haven’t updated my blog for some time now. I’m kind of busy here. Lots of homework to take care and tests are coming up. Apart from that, there are too many activities to keep me occupied – badminton, tennis, table tennis, watching movie…

Yesterday, my housemaster brought all the L6 students in my house to play golf somewhere in Perth, a place called Noah’s Ark. It’s quite enjoyable actually. Golf is not as easy as it seems. At first glance, it may look like a man swinging a golf putt to send the small white ball flying. Ok… Swinging involves techniques, and without that, the ball will not fly, i.e. you will not hit the ball. Or the ball becomes too heavy to fly, i.e. the ball flies and land right in front of you. And out of the 40 balls I hit, I think only around 10 are perfect shots. A percentage of 25% despite having played golf once a few months back.

Tomorrow, again, I’m going to Perth. There’s an outing to Glasgow actually, but I opt not to go. It’s too tiring. I just want to stay behind in the school and do my own thing. Perth is nothing. Just go there in the afternoon for around 2 hours to shop for some snack and drinks. Better than sitting on the bus for like 1 hour to get to Glasgow.

I’m still planning of what to do for the half-term. Going down to London is a sure thing, but what the hell should I do there?? My parents are coming, right. But they are only here for 4 days, how about the remaining 6 days? OMG!!! Wish I have some things in mind. Maybe I should just go around and explore London… Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, London Dungeon, Madam Tussuads, London Eye, Chinatown etc.

I want to go back to Asia during the X’mas holiday, maybe to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai or Brunei if possible. I miss my Asian food, rice, curry… And things there are much cheaper. Anyway, if my parents want to come to London, I will have to stay here. Aaahh… I hate the European winter. No sun and bitterly cold.

Strathallan...

Ok… today I picked my 6th A-Level subject, Chinese. Yay! It’s not much to study, and the teacher wants me to do both AS and A Level this year. Lesson time: 2.15 – 3.30pm every Wednesday afternoon. And that’s it. 75 minutes every week. You bet it’s going to be easy. It’s mostly translation from Chinese to English and vice versa, and a 180-words essay for AS level and 500 words factual essay for A level. This paper is designed for the locals here… so I don’t think it’s a problem for me, I hope.

Got my first test on Friday – Core Maths. It’s one of the 3 syllabuses of Maths we are studying – Core Maths, Mechanics and Statistics, and each of them is taught by a different teacher. And each of my other subjects - Chemistry, Physics and Biology has 2 teachers, each focusing on different chapters. OMG… despite having just 6 subjects, I have 12 teachers. Cool, right?
Let me share with you what I have been doing in the school for the week.
The schedule:
0720 House Roll Call
0730 Breakfast
0810 Morning Roll Call
0820 Chapel (Tue, Wed)
0820 School Assembly (Fri)
0840 – 1610 Lessons (Mon, Fri)
0840 – 1315 Lessons (Tue, Wed, Thu)
0830 – 1220 Lessons (Sat)
1220 Lunch (Sat)
1315 Lunch (Mon-Fri, Sun)
1330 Sports (Sat)
1430 Sports (Tue, Thu)
1620 Tutor period (Mon)
1800 Dinner
1930 – 2115 Prep (Mon-Fri)
1930 – 2030 Prep (Sat, Sun)
2030 – 2300 Party for 6th Form (Sat)

Prep is the time allocated for us to stay in our rooms to do our homework (even if you do not have any homework…). Normally, I wake up around 6.30am and sleep around 10.00pm, unless if I have a lot of prep.

08/09/2008

Ahhh… the first Monday I spent in school. Lessons start 8.40 am and ends 4.10 pm, with a half-an-hour break and 1-hour lunch break in between. Then straight afterwards, we had a house meeting at 4.20 pm, which lasted to around 5pm. Have been here for a few days now, but I just have this weird feeling of speaking more Chinese than English most of the time, since most of my friends are Chinese and I might be useful as a “professional” translator. I have never expected this… Anyway, it’s good too. Now I can speak mandarin slang.

My further maths class is very distinctive in the sense that 8 of the 10 students who take further maths are Chinese (including me…). Haha… there’s another Scottish and a German. I have heard that another German is joining our class. He is complaining that the normal maths class is child’s work. Well… I kind of agree. They haven’t even started on logarithm, differentiation, integration… WTH! Now, I am back to Form 2 (Primary 6 for the Chinese…) and studying indices. This sounds stupid, but they really have no clue when I asked them about logarithm. OMG…

Apart from overseas students from China, Hong Kong and Brunei, I met one from Africa today in my Biology class, from Tanzania, to be precise. Wow… Anyway, biology is always boring. I thought it might change but well, it seems to me that it’s not the teachers that bore me, but the subject as a whole is boring. Just study for the sake of studying…

Most of the Chinese are from Guangdong province, such as the cities of Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan. There is one from Jiangxi and another one from Beijing as well.

My boarding house, Ruthven, is not bad. We have a good housemaster, Mr. Andrew Watt. He is very friendly. I like the fact that things are really organized in the house. Every day we have a schedule of everything that’s going on right in front of the main door. At least this keeps me informed. We also have a ping pong table in the common room and a wide screen TV. The sofas are very comfy, really really soft and makes me don’t feel like standing up after sitting on it. There are lots of toilet, you don’t have to worry of having to queue for a toilet seat. However, the showers are damn hot. I mean, the water is damn hot. Very very hot. Shower for 10 minutes continuously and you’re cooked. That’s why I normally take quick shower.

Ohhh… I really want to upload my pictures. What’s wrong with my broadband???

Strathallan...

Haven’t blogged for a long time. The school Internet blocks blogger and MSN, but facebook is still available. So now, haha… I am using my own USB modem. Nice! No more censoring… I can do whatever I want, but I have to go to one particular corner of my house to secure stable connection. In my room, the connection went off and on. So annoying!!! That’s one of the problems of having a school in such a remote area.

My school is fine, kind of awesome I think. It’s really huge. A golf course, rugby field, gymnasium, swimming pool and each department has their own teaching blocks. Just hope it doesn’t rain during lesson time. Sports are compulsory to all students on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons, starting 2.30pm. Choices are badminton, swimming, basketball, fencing, rugby, curling… The people here have an uncanny affinity towards rugby. They love it! I would never play that, no way, unless I want to break a bone or break another of my teeth. I play badminton, although I prefer swimming, but the pool isn’t ready yet. So yea, guess I would just continue with badminton since I don’t really want to swim when the temperature drops to 0 deg Celsius.

At first, I thought the school is only for rich Scottish people, considering its relative unknown to the outside world and its expensive school fee. True enough, people who study here are rich, except the few of us who are here on a scholarship. But the Scots aren’t completely dominant. There are, unexpectedly, many people from Hong Kong and China. Some have already been here for 2-3 years. At least with such Asian presence I don’t feel like a complete stranger.

On every alternate Saturday nights, the school will organize a party in the form of disco for the 6th form students. What a surprise! They even serve beer. That’s right, BEER in school. People there, especially the girls, are crazy about partying. The speaker is lousy, and when the sound comes out in full blast, it feels as if my head is about to explode. Oh yes! Welcome to the western world. By the way, I didn’t drink that night. Just feel that it’s not the right thing to do… Yea, keep it up, myself… You’ve done the right thing.

We are given a chance to go to Perth every Sunday afternoon, which is about 10 minutes drive away. A small town it is. We are given 2 hours to roam around. I bought my modem there just now, and some goodies… haha… cookies, juices and some soft drinks for me to munch during prep time. Prep time is the only time in school, except during lessons, that I have lost my freedom. It’s like spending 2 hours every night in the room to study, or sleep, or do whatever you want, but NEVER leave the room.

Food in the school is not bad. But one thing for sure, there’s no Asian food. And the rice they cook sucks. It’s hard and they actually cook it with cheese and tomato. Can you actually eat something like that?? Well, not for me, not for an Asian. Breakfast is at 7.30am, lunch 1.15pm and dinner 6pm. No supper, unfortunately.

As for girls, there are a lot of pretty Scots girls in the school, but to me, they all look, one way or another, alike. I think the Chinese girls are far more interesting than they are. Who says I am going to have an angmo girlfriend???

PS: I tried to upload pictures of myself, but unfortunately the Internet doesn't want to co-operate. Guess I will have to make do with it, for now...

Meow...

Just made a trip to Kuching on Wednesday. Not much of sightseeing, since we don't have muuh time and Kuching isn't an ideal place for sightseeing. Did some last-minute shopping before going to UK, but unfortunately there's not much to buy... although it's relatively cheap. So, I guess that makes 3 trips to Malaysia within 8 days... Miri (24/8), Kuching (27/8) and KL (31/8). Then BYE BYE ASIA, I'M OFF TO EUROPE!!!

Ok, my family did organise me a "2nd farewell party" or a last-gasp advanced birthday party. Lots of food... BBQ. I think my cousins enjoy it more that I do. It will be my last family gathering for at least 9 months, where I'm off at the bleak weather of Scotland and endure the endless solitude and stress piling on my shoulders... Anyway, just like I have said, if I miss them, just punch a few button and give them a call.... of course I won't cry... if I can resist it of course.

An old woman has 3 sons. All of them grew up as successful businessmen. Their business are expanding and they have earned a lot of money. As the birthday tof he old woman approaches, all of them wanted to give her a present. The eldest son, John, owns a construction company and decided to give his mother a big house. "Mom, I give you this house so that you can live comfortably for the rest of your life..." The second son, Jack, owns a automobile factory and decided to give the old woman a nice Mercedez Benz. "Mom, I give you this car so you don't have to worry about your transportation so much." The youngest son, James, who owns a pet shop is not as rich as his 2 older brother, but he wants his present to be meaningful to his beloved mother as well. He knew since young that his mother loves to read, but as she becomes older, her eyesight deteriorates. So, he gave a highly-trained parrot which can read almost everything - magazine, novel, comics... to his mother.

After 3 months, the old woman starts to complain. She asked her 3 sons to come home for a gathering. She then told John, "You gave me this big house, but I am staying alone, and all that I could occupy is only one room. Now I have to clean this big house every day." Then, she said to Jack, "Jack, you gave that black car, but I am old, my eyesight is poor and I could no longer drive. I seldom use the car and now I have to maintain it."... "Ah, James, only you understand me the best, the chicken you gave me taste REALLY good...!!!"

My last weekend... in Brunei

OK... took a break from blogging for a few days. But now I'm back... and I still have no idea what to write. So, there goes my final weekend in Brunei. Last Saturday started with a visit to CHMS and went to meet all the teachers... Teacher Mili (physics), Stella (maths), Anne(a/c), Wong(chinese), Tan (BM), Alicia (english), Concepcion (chemistry). Didn't meet Teacher Shanthi (bio) and Mr. Lim (maths) have left for Indonesia. Then, went for a jab (injection)... ah... 2 jabs actually. My papers only require me to have a Hepatitis B vaccination, but the nurse gave me a "bonus" flu vaccination, one on each arm... OUCH!!

Sunday... Miri!!! Went to make a spare pair of glasses, as well as some grocery shopping. Lucky me that there are not much traffic.

Organised a farewell party yesterday. I kept the guest list short... invited only about 9 people. All boys! The steamboat at Portview Restaurant was not bad. Too much food... but that's good. Then, drafting!!! Didn't manage to put even a single rare card into my deck. It's single elimination, but I made it to the top 4, although there are only 8 players =p. So,
Round 1: Me 2 - 1 Dev
Semi: Me 1 - 2 Yongbo... K.O.
Some of the rares I've got last night:

Twilight Mire has been traded with Figure of Destiny:

Will be in Kuala Lumpur for a night on 31 Aug. In time for the National Day. Heard most of the shops are closed for half day. Would love my last sip of teh tarik and last plate of nasi briyani before heading for UK. Andrew....!!!

What Kuohong Means...

What Kuohong Means

You are a seeker of knowledge, and you have learned many things in your life.

You are also a keeper of knowledge - meaning you don't spill secrets or spread gossip.

People sometimes think you're snobby or aloof, but you're just too deep in thought to pay attention to them.

You are a very lucky person. Things just always seem to go your way.

And because you're so lucky, you don't really have a lot of worries. You just hope for the best in life.

You're sometimes a little guilty of being greedy. Spread your luck around a little to people who need it.

You are well rounded, with a complete perspective on life.

You are solid and dependable. You are loyal, and people can count on you.

At times, you can be a bit too serious. You tend to put too much pressure on yourself.

You are truly an original person. You have amazing ideas, and the power to carry them out.

Success comes rather easily for you... especially in business and academia.

Some people find you to be selfish and a bit overbearing. You're a strong person.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.

You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.

You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You are deeply philosophical and thoughtful. You tend to analyze every aspect of your life.

You are intuitive, brilliant, and quite introverted. You value your time alone.

Often times, you are grumpy with other people. You don't appreciate them trying to interfere in your affairs.

Farewell-ed

I've never seen something more emotional than this - a farewell dinner for me. Yea, as you have expected, some people cried, especially my grandma. She cried for several times that night. There were some speeches and I was the last to talk. I didn't cry... not that I won't miss them, but really with technologies nowadays, UK doesn't seem that far anymore, and I will be back after 10 months - not a long time. But yea, no ang pows for CNY, no moon-cake for Mid-Autumn Festival, no more home-style cooking for at least 10 months...blah blah blah.

That was my speech that night...haha... not bad eh?? Actually, I didn't really prepare for it. More like an impromptu speech. I just simply jot down a few points in my head and go up and talk. I guess I did quite well.

Ok... 2 more classes of guitar and I'm off... Damn, guitar is hard, and now I'm experiencing occasional finger cramps nowadays. Strumming is fine... but when it comes to those complicated hand techniques coupled with many different chords (especially F and B)... ouch! Anyway, I'm not bringing my guitar to UK. No way! Guitar = extra weight. Guitar = fragile. Guitar = bulky My parents offered to bring it when they come to visit me. I said, "screw it lah... I'm not gonna join the music club anyway..."

I still haven't decided what sports to take up in Scotland... That school of mine is rather sport-oriented. Half day of school and half day of sports. Haiz... You know I hate those kind of school. I'm no good at sports. I only do sucky things like running, jogging, hiking and Tai-chi to keep myself fit. I haven't palyed basketball for like 5 years and I'm not into soccer. Rugby? No way!!! Maybe I will join the ski club and the golf club... but the equipments seem really expensive. Btw, my school have its own golf course (cool... isn't it??), rugby field, soccer field, indoor gymnasium... apart from its teaching blocks, boarding houses and dining hall. Very big compound. The only downside - it's in the middle of nowhere. 45 mins by car to Edinburgh and 1 hr to Glasgow, the 2 nearest cities.

The school doesn't offer accounting, and stopped chinese courses last year. (sob...sob...sob...) I don't really want biology, but there isn't much for me to take already. Ecomonics? I don't really have the basics. French, Spanish, German, Latin?? WTH!! No way I'm taking History as well...
But if I have no choice, Bio will still do.

I hitch-hiked...

Ok... It's not common to hitch a hike in Brunei. But I did...today. Well... actually I was walking to the usual coffeeshop near MinDef to wait for my father to pick me up. Then, I think I might be able to catch a bus home coz there's a bus stop around 10 minutes walk from the coffeeshop. So yea, I walked. I guessed I was sweaty and a car just stopped beside me and the driver asked me, "ke mana ko pergi?". I don't know what he wants, since he is a complete stranger to me. So I said, "oh! ke bus stop di depan..." Before I could finish, he asked me to hop in. In the car, there's an old couple, around 60-70 years of age. He told me, "bah aku hantar ko ke sana sajalah... kasian ko berpeluh." At first, he wanted to drop me at the bus stop saja, but there's no shade at the bus stop and the weather is very hot. So he asked where do I stay. I said, "di Berakas, Lambak area.". Then, he said, "aku hantar ko balik la". I don't know what to say, since I have never encountered such kindness before, and all that I could manage was, "baik tah!" I showed him the way. And yea, here I am, at the comfort of my home, telling this story...

Amidst all the hustle and bustle of life nowadays, people seldom find the time to care for other people, not to mention stranger. But this old couple stood out amongst all of them. There are more to life than to be yourself. You live in this world, not because of you yourself, but because of other people around you - your family, your friends, your colleagues and even strangers that you meet every day. I have no idea whether the old couple would ever see this, but I would like to express my sincere gratitude for making that extra effort of sending me home today. Thank You!!!

There are many other encounters and experiences that happened to me while I was walking. I believe the best way to see this world is to walk. Last time, while I was walking in front of a primary school gate, there were a bunch of kids playing and talking to each other. One of them shouted "Oi, ke mana?", apparently directing to me. But I ignored it, thinking it might be for someone behind me and that it would be awkward if I were to wave and say hi. Then, i heard someone saying, "Assalamualaikum.". I ignored it again. Then came another "Eh, u!" I turned back this time and saw all of them staring at me. I waved and said "Hi!" Then all of them burst out in laughter. I laughed too...

I often walked in Bandar as well, and that day there was this young (around 20-ish) cute British tourist in front of Coffee Bean. She was holding a map and looked puzzled. I guessed she was lost. And then she approached me and asked me the way to Sheraton Hotel. I pointed her the direction and she took off. The next day, I met her again in an Indian coffee shop at Jalan Sultan. She waved and smiled at me. I smiled in return...

If you think walking is just a way to cut cost or to be eco-friendly. Think again. Walking leaves me many fond memories that I would not have got if I had a car... Think again.

B:不,是I。
A:是U!
B:是I!

Went to the clinic for my medical today. Damn, waited for 2.5 hours before the doctor called me in. How inefficient can a clinic get?? Not sure if the doctors are working, sleeping or drinking tea in their rooms... Sometimes it takes 0.5 hour after the last patient have left before the doctor called the next one in. WTH??!! The morale: If you are in serious need of medical attention... like feeling extremely uncomfortable, avoid government clinics. It's not worth the time you spend waiting... although it's free.

I bought the movie: Red Cliff just now. Watched it. Not bad. It's easy for me to understand the movie because I've read about it many times on books, but I wonder how those people without a single clue on Chinese history would understand it. And the movie is "to be continued"... haha... some movie, huh?

The EPL returns to action tonight, with Chelsea and Arsenal trying to wrestle the title from Man United. The first game starts 1245 BST or 1945 Brunei Local Time.

Btw, there's a preview of the new set, Shards of Alara: Naya, Bant, Esper, Grixis and Jund. Not sure what they are, surely don't seem like the new planewalkers. I think there will be 10 planewalkers, all multi-coloured (non-hybrid...). Shards look like an interesting set...

Actually, I've heard the mp3 of this song.... but this video is like completely different... the feel and parts of the lyrics...

Haven't updated my blog for the past 2 days. Don't really have much idea what to write. I am still not informed of my departure date yet. Well... maybe it's around 10 days to 2 weeks from now. Pehin mentioned that he wants us to stay in London for a few days before going up to Scotland. I'm not sure if that's gonna happen...

Some of the things I am seriously going to miss after I leave:
1. Food... my murtabak, kolomee, satay and...
2. Friends... definitely
3. Home...
4. Magic... not sure how much am I going to miss dat
5. the SUN... the heat...
6. gf?? sori but I don't have 1...hehe...
I think the list's complete. Can't think of anything else.

Planning to watch Star Wars: The Clone War today but unfortunately due to unfavourable timing... decided to call it off. Instead I am going to watch Meet Dave. Hope it's nice. What's more?? Today I am alone =(

Received a message just now. Gotta join Pehin for a walkathon tomorrow at 7am at Bolkiah Garrison, Berakas. Not sure if it's an obligation, but it sure sounds like one. So I think I'll go. O'well... another day to wake up early.

Monday, August 11, 2008

Today is day 4 of the Beijing Olympics 2008. After day 3, China tops the medal count with 14 medals and is the only nation to have won as many as 9 gold medals.
1. China 9G 3S 2B
2. South Korea 4G 4S 0B
3. USA 3G 4S 5B.

South Korea has stayed on the 2nd spot for 3 days continuously, but I think USA will catch up due to its strength in track and field events.

OK... now for some of my personal stuff. Damn, it's already mid August and I still have no idea when I am leaving... got the vague idea of around end of this month, while the MOE scholars have already known when they are flying (not sure if all of them have been informed..). Anyway, I'm kind of frustrated lah. Played on clubxiangqi, but OMG... W2 D0 L8!!! Now my rating sucks... 1430+. Wouldn't have played if I weren't so bored at home. Always the same... off to a good start... then opps wrong move... and next thing you know I am seriously disadvantaged.

Going to watch Meet Dave this afternoon. And planning to watch Star Wars: The Clone War next week (Andrew!!!). Then, go home...mandi...makan...guitar...maybe c.chess...sleep. Boring life, huh??!! Wish I can get to Scotland as soon as possible. And should I take Bio?? I don't really feel like taking it lah... since I am pursuing engineering. My subjects taken:
1. Chemistry
2. Physics
3. Maths/Further Maths (yes! they are considered as one sub...)
4. BIO???!!

Actually I chose Chem, Phy, Maths and F.Maths as my 4 subjects, but they consider Maths and F.Maths as one subject, so I will have to choose another one, but WTH they register me in the Biology class without consulting my opinion. I don't really want to take Bio lah... not interested. I would rather take Chinese or Accounting.

Any nice Chinese, Malay, English, Thai, Indian or Japanese songs??

Keep it up!!! You are da best!!!

China remains on the top of the medal table after day 2:
1. China 6G 2S 0B
2. South Korea 3G 2S 0B
3. USA 2G 2S 4B
Both China and the USA top the medal count, at 8.

The Olympics medals for Beijing 2008:

This year's design includes jade at the back of the medal...

There are a total of 7 gold medals up for grabs today:
China - weightlifting and shooting

08-08-08

Watched the Beijing Summer Olympics 2008 opening ceremony just now. Whoa!!! Spectacular...!!! Massive fireworks display... like the whole city is ON FIRE!!! (i mean on firework...). Great demonstration of the 4 great inventions of ancient China - paper-making, compass, gunpowder and mass publishing. There are 205 members in the International Olympic Council, only 204 turned up for the march-past. Guess who's missing??? BRUNEI!!! and it's the only absentee...

I like the way they light of the Olympic torch... very creative. Wish I was there =P Let's see what the 2012 London Olympics can offer... and which do you think can host the 2016 Olympics?? Tokyo?? Madrid?? or Rio de Janeiro?? But after Beijing and London, Tokyo and Madrid don't really have much chance, I think...
Go China!!!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Happy birthday to the birthday boy: Nazha

You definitely won't see him walking around in Bandar simply coz' he is a legend... and he lives somewhere up there. Maybe once in a while you will see him playing chinese chess with another guy when you are flying in the aeroplane but that's really really rare, considering there isn't any reported sighting yet. But nevertheless, I met him today... well... not in person... but in another person. For those of you who are still lost, let me enlighten you. Nazha is a god, a Buddhist deity, and today happens to be his birthday - the 7th of the 7th month on the lunar calendar. And he came all the way down to our austere little temple at BSB to greet us... or more precisely to show up in the body of another person. By the way, he doesn't eat cake...

Here's what he does after he came all the way down:
i) dance around in the temple.
ii) honour the other deities in the temple (involves cutting his lips with a sword until it bleeds).
iii) offer free consultation service for frustrated individuals.
iv) go home.

The Birthday boy in action.
There's another reason to be joyous about today. It's VALENTINE'S DAY!!! for the chinese. It falls on 7th of the 7th month on the lunar calendar. Well, it doesn't really concern me... coz I don't have a girlfriend, which is also good since I don't have to worry too much...

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Done most of my MC today. Blood test, urine test, faeces test, x-ray, cardio test, mantoux skin test (for TB), vision test, hearing test, dental test... blah blah blah... and all goes on well. Currently waiting for my x-ray result (out next tuesday.) then make an appointment with a doctor (or what they call GP - General Practitioner). Anyway, really tired after all the check-ups. Looking forward to a rest, maybe watch movie.... again. This time maybe I watch Meet Dave or Shaolin Girl. But not tomorrow, because I will be going to the temple to watch some chinese guy being possessed by a god so we can worship. Christians and Muslims... you won't understand what I am saying and you don't need to know.

Another great Indonesian song I am listening to: ST 12 - Puspa. I am so obssessed with Indonesian songs...

By the way, any recommendations on some good movies???

Who has the software for writing Japanese?? I want one... Shiok jua tu menaip bahasa jepun di komputer. Kitani orang Asia, jangan senantiasa menggunakan bahasa angmo ya?? Boleh mix la... but at least show you are being patriotic. Majal ku eh... Use Asian language!!!

Aku ke drafting lagi tadi... boring... 6 orang saja.... boring berabis!!! so aku pulang halfway. Seriously, nada mood tuk main harini. Sori wa, bahasaku rojak sikit.. but should be fine, I think most of us paham, kan? kadangkala pun boleh campur sikit 华语ataupun 日本语, barutah shiok!

About 3 more weeks lagi hingga we take off. Excited benar but a bit worried la.. don't really know why? Belum buat my medical yet, maybe 2ml or tuesday la. Visa aku buat on Friday. Then, I think that's about all for my pre-takeoff preparation. And I am so... gonna see salju (or salji??)...again. It's going to be a white white world...haha... but why do I feel like an Eskimo..??

Maybe it's true like Tung Lian has said, I have been going to the movie quite often lately...

Well, but if you think it in my perspective, staying at home can be, and will always be boring!! That's why I went to watch The Mummy today, with Jason, Heng Huat and Dev. They have got a full cinema, lucky we booked early. The movie was alright, but I find it very strange that Chinese born in China over 2000 years ago actually can speak perfect English... Incredible... It's very much a fantasy story.

Jason wants me to sing Indonesian songs...haha... whatever. How about this??:

A lovely Thai song and a lovely Thai singer.

I suck in Magic...

Went to drafting today... Man! I thought I have made quite a good deck... but... things just don't always go my way.
Round 1: win 2-1 Siu
Round 2: loss 1-2 Dev
Round 3: loss 0-2 CC
Round 4: Bye
Round 5: loss 1-2 Hilmi.

See!!! My drafting skills really suck!!! Because there's only 6 players, so we didn't play a sanctioned event. But frankly, I don't really care if it's sanctioned or not. I just wanna go there and have fun. Sold some of my rares and that makes the draft cheaper..haha...

I love this card: Overbeing of Myth

I love this card too: Mutavault. Inform me if someone wishes to sell this card.

I made some modification to my Mirror Master.
Out: 2 Thoughtweft Trio, 2 Militia Pride, 2 Oversoul of Dusk.
In: 1 Plain, 3 Cloudgoat Ranger, 2 Springjack Shepherd.

Spent the last two days at home... Man! I am really bored now. Read books? I have read lots already. Surf the Net? Really getting too much of it already. Sleep? Well... not really my kinda of stuff. Eat? A good past-time, but just look at the size of my body. Lame jokes? Neh... Chess? Maybe, if I have someone to play with.

Looking forward to watching The Mummy, out on Thursday. Maybe I'll go after my AMC...

Back!!!

Aaah... finally, back to my room again!! and one day ahead of schedule. Should have returned from Guangzhou tomorrow, but who cares when you have already finished your urusan and the weather is so DAMN hot... At noon, the temperature reaches as hot as 37-38 deg. celsius, feel like being baked in an oven. Here's some pictures:

On the ferry heading to Humen... and my oreo =p. We travelled by plane to Hong Kong, then ferry to Humen, then by car to Guangzhou... Long trip.

Guangzhou at night. Very colourful.

Guangzhou under daylight. The 2nd picture is not only a street full of modern shops but also, under the ground, ancient tracks and roads dating back to the Ming and Sung Dynasty (about AD 200- 1500)
